The Split area offers some of Croatia's most beautiful beaches - from quiet pebble coves perfect for snorkeling to sandy stretches ideal for families. As locals who've lived in Stobreč for over 20 years, we're sharing our insider guide to the best beaches near Split.

1. Stobreč Beach - Our #1 Pick

Right in our hometown, Stobreč beach is a beautiful pebble beach with incredibly clear water. It's much less crowded than Split beaches while offering the same crystal-clear Adriatic quality.

Best for: Families, swimming, snorkeling, sunset watching

Type: Pebble beach

Facilities: Cafes, showers, free access

Distance from Split: 6 km (15 min drive)

Crowd level: Low to medium

Why we love it: The water quality is excellent for swimming, the pebbles are smooth and comfortable, and you can watch stunning sunsets over Brač Island. It's just 10 meters from our apartments!

2. Žnjan Beach - Split's Sandy Beach

Žnjan is Split's most popular sandy beach, located on the eastern edge of the city. The sandy entrance makes it perfect for families with small children.

Best for: Families with kids, beach sports, socializing

Type: Sandy/pebble mix

Facilities: Restaurants, cafes, water sports, showers, changing rooms

Distance from Stobreč: 3 km walking along promenade

Crowd level: High (especially July-August)

Tip: Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. The beach has volleyball courts and offers various water sports.

3. Bačvice Beach - Beach Party Central

Famous for "picigin" (a traditional Dalmatian beach game), Bačvice is Split's most central beach, located right next to the city center.

Best for: Young people, nightlife, watching picigin

Type: Sandy

Facilities: Beach bars, restaurants, clubs, showers

Distance from city center: 500m walking

Crowd level: Very high

Local secret: Watch the picigin championship in August - it's a unique Dalmatian experience!

4. Kašjuni Beach - Hidden Marjan Gem

On the south side of Marjan Hill, Kašjuni is a quieter pebble beach surrounded by pine forest. It's a local favorite for escaping the crowds.

Best for: Peace and quiet, nature lovers, snorkeling

Type: Pebble

Facilities: Beach bar, showers

Distance from city center: 3 km (walk through Marjan park)

Beach Tips from a Local

  • Best time to visit: June and September offer warm weather with fewer crowds than July-August
  • Bring water shoes: Most beaches are pebble/rocky - water shoes make it more comfortable
  • Avoid midday sun: 12pm-4pm is scorching in summer. Swim in the morning and late afternoon
  • Public beaches are free: All beaches in Croatia are public and free to access
  • Snorkeling gear: The clear water makes for great snorkeling - bring your own or buy cheap sets in local shops
  • Sunset spots: West-facing beaches like Stobreč and Kašjuni offer the best sunsets

For families: Žnjan, Firule, or Stobreč
For peace and quiet: Stobreč, Kašjuni, Trstenik
